Volunteer Opportunities

Patient/Family Care Volunteer Opportunities

Patient/Family Care Volunteers in Homes and Nursing Facilities

Provide companionship and emotional support to patients, respite for caregivers, run errands, do yard work, film and edit patient Life Reflection DVDs, give haircuts, massages and pet therapy (licenses and certifications required), and other needed support for patients and their families. Opportunities for long or short-term relationships with patients and families.

Hospice House Volunteers

Assist Hospice House staff in providing quality in-patient care and a warm, home-like atmosphere for patients and their families during patients’ stays in our Hospice House. Sit with patients, comfort families, greet and welcome visitors, answer phones, provide kitchen support and help with various operational and housekeeping duties. Opportunities for short-term relationships with patients and families.

Gerald D. Robison Residence Volunteers

Assist Gerald D. Robison Residence staff in providing quality care and a warm, home-like atmosphere for patients living in our residence and their families. Befriend patients and families, provide activities, help with meal preparation, assist with laundry and light housekeeping and make deliveries on campus using a golf cart. Opportunities for long-term relationships with patients and families.

11th Hour Volunteers

Give on-call emotional support by sitting with patients and their families who do not want to be alone at the hour of death.

Is patient/family care volunteering for you?

The patient/family care volunteer provides practical, psychosocial and spiritual support to the hospice patient/family under the supervision of a volunteer coordinator and a volunteer team leader.

The patient/family care volunteer may provide services in patient homes, nursing facilities, the Hospice House or the Robison Residence.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Serving as companion for patient
  • Providing relief for caregivers
  • Providing light housekeeping
  • Assisting with shopping and errands
  • Providing haircuts, massage, pet therapy (licenses required) or services for life review
  • Contributing to an environment in which professional caregivers and staff can work cooperatively
  • Maintaining confidentiality
  • Providing required monthly documentation of time and activity
  • Attending educational/support meetings
  • Facilitating community awareness and support of Hospice of the Comforter

Qualifications:

  • Meet all licensing and certification requirements indicated by scope of service provided
  • Maintain annual TB testing compliance
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Demonstrate good interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrate healthy adjustment to loss
  • Successful completion of patient services volunteer training
  • Successful completion of Hospice House or Robison Residence volunteer training, 11th hour volunteer training, or other additional training indicated for scope of services provided
  • Demonstrate appropriate patient care skills
  • Demonstrate understanding of limitations for volunteers in patient care
  • Demonstrate ability to maintain appropriate boundaries
  • Demonstrate understanding of patient/family care interdisciplinary team model

Non-Patient Care Opportunities

Bereavement Support Volunteers

Support grieving families through phone calls, home visits or assistance with memorial services and ongoing support groups.

Is bereavement support volunteering for you? 

The bereavement support volunteer provides follow-up information, emotional support and companionship to clients under the supervision of a volunteer coordinator and a bereavement services manager.

Bereavement support services are available to anyone in the community, regardless of whether or not their loved one was a Hospice of the Comforter patient.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Providing information, bereavement support and companionship
  • Communicating with clients at designated intervals via phone, mail and visits
  • Contributing to an environment in which professional staff can work cooperatively
  • Maintaining confidentiality
  • Providing required monthly documentation of time and activity
  • Attending education and support meetings
  • Facilitating community awareness and support of Hospice of the Comforter

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Demonstrate good interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrate healthy adjustment to loss
  • Successful completion of patient services volunteer training
  • Successful completion of bereavement support training
  • Demonstrate understanding of and sensitivity to grief/loss process
  • Demonstrate ability to maintain appropriate boundaries
  • Demonstrate understanding of patient/family care interdisciplinary team model

Administrative Support Volunteers

Assist staff in every department in a wide range of important duties including data entry, filing, copying, mailings, work or data management system set-ups and more.

Is administrative support volunteering for you?

The administrative support volunteer provides administrative support for all Hospice of the Comforter departments under the supervision of a volunteer coordinator and a department supervisor.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Performing standard clerical and administrative functions including:
  • General office functions including typing, filing, copying, mailings, phone calls
  • Data entry
  • Record maintenance
  • Office maintenance
  • Assisting with special work process or systems implementation projects
  • Contributing to an environment in which professional staff can work cooperatively
  • Maintaining confidentiality
  • Providing required monthly documentation of time and activity
  • Attending educational/support meetings
  • Facilitating community awareness and support of Hospice of the Comforter

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Demonstrate good interpersonal communication skills
  • Successful completion of basic volunteer training and/or patient services volunteer training
  • Demonstrate good computer and clerical skills

Special Projects and Special Events Volunteers

Work with donor relations or with the various special events sponsored by Hospice of the Comforter such as the annual Life.Art.Music. event, the annual Gift of Hope Breakfast, and the monthly Every Day is a Gift Breakfast tour.

Is special projects/special events volunteering for you?

The special projects/special events volunteer provides support for special events and fundraising efforts, under the supervision of a volunteer coordinator and a department supervisor.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Providing support for donor relations
  • Assisting with Hospice of the Comforter events and fundraising efforts as needed
  • Contributing to an environment in which professional staff can work cooperatively
  • Maintaining confidentiality
  • Providing required monthly documentation of time and activity
  • Attending educational/support meetings
  • Facilitating community awareness and support of Hospice of the Comforter

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Demonstrate good interpersonal communication skills
  • Successful completion of basic volunteer training and/or patient services volunteer training
  • Adherence to policies and procedures for donor relations, events and fundraising efforts

Ambassador Volunteers

Provide and support outreach and marketing activities as a speaker or as a health fair representative to educate the community about services provided by Hospice of the Comforter.

Is ambassador volunteering for you?

The ambassador volunteer provides support for community outreach and marketing activities to promote the benefits of hospice care and Hospice of the Comforter services under the supervision of a volunteer coordinator and a department supervisor.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Facilitating or co-facilitating presentations
  • Providing educational support for health expos, senior events, etc.
  • Contributing to an environment in which professional staff can work cooperatively
  • Maintaining confidentiality
  • Providing required monthly documentation of time and activity
  • Attending educational/support meetings
  • Facilitating community awareness and support of Hospice of the Comforter

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Demonstrate good interpersonal communication skills
  • Successful completion of basic volunteer training and/or patient services volunteer training
  • Successful completion of ambassador speaker training
  • Adherence to policies and procedures for outreach presentations and marketing activities

Bilingual Volunteers

Facilitate communication between patients, their families and their care team members. As our Central Florida community grows, we continue to care for more patients and families unable to communicate in English.

Youth Volunteers

Assist with a variety of administrative support needs. You must be at least 18 years old to work with patients and families.

Is youth volunteering for you?

The youth volunteer provides administrative and non-patient care support for all Hospice of the Comforter departments under the supervision of a volunteer coordinator and a department supervisor.

When youth volunteers reach the age of 18 and have completed all requirements for volunteer services they want to provide, they will have adult volunteer status.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Performing standard clerical and administrative functions including:
  • General office functions including typing, filing, copying, mailings
  • Record maintenance
  • Assisting with special work process or systems implementation projects
  • Contributing to an environment in which professional staff can work cooperatively
  • Maintaining confidentiality
  • Providing required monthly documentation of time and activity
  • Attending educational/support meetings
  • Facilitating community awareness and support of Hospice of the Comforter

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Parental consent must be completed and on file
  • Recommendation/reference from school counselor or teacher must be completed and on file
  • Demonstrate good interpersonal communication skills
  • Successful completion of basic volunteer training and/or patient services volunteer training
