The Significance of Volunteers

February 25, 2011 | By: Rose van der Berg, Director of Volunteer Services

RoseDo you know the dollar value of volunteer hours provided in 2010 to Hospice of the Comforter? Well - hold on to your hat! - because the dollar value of the service volunteers gave to our mission of compassionate service in 2010 is close to one million dollars!

Volunteers contributed a total of 46, 757 service hours in 2010. This is the highest total number of volunteer service hours in our organization’s history.

In 2010, volunteers gave:

26, 841 patient care and family support service hours

13,005 administrative organizational support service hours

6, 911 board service, fundraising, and training attendance service hours

Based on the national hourly value of volunteer time published by the Independent Sector, the dollar value of the service hours volunteers gave in 2010 is $974, 883. The Independent Sector is an important coalition of major national charities that calculates an annual national hourly dollar value of volunteer time. The current value is $20.85 an hour.

Charitable organizations can use this estimate to help acknowledge the donation of individuals who dedicate themselves to making a difference by giving their time through volunteer work.

There is no way to quantify or calculate the true value and impact of the passion, dedication, love, talent and energy each volunteer gives to care for our patients and families and help us sustain our organization. Recognizing the estimated dollar value of their hours of service is one way to fully grasp the extent of their incredible generosity.

We are deeply grateful to each and every one of our volunteers. They are amazing.
