A Life-Changing Gift
junio 23, 2010 | By: Ray Barr, Planned Giving Manager
Four years ago, a Hospice of the Comforter patient wanted to leave a gift to support our mission. He was concerned, however, about making a gift that would impact his quality of life or cut into the financial resources he needed for his immediate care. After careful consideration, he named Hospice of the Comforter as beneficiary of a life insurance policy he no longer needed.
A year ago today, Hospice of the Comforter received a check from the Department of Veterans Affairs in the amount of $28,440.09. The check was payment of the benefit from the donor’s life insurance policy issued by the department.
His gift was enough to fully pay for more than 200 days of care for hospice patients who lacked insurance and didn't qualify for Medicare or Medicaid benefits. For the patients and families he helped, it was truly a life-changing gift.
It was easy to make the gift. The donor simply named Hospice of the Comforter on a “change of beneficiary” form, signed it, and mailed it back to the insurer. The premiums had already been paid. The gift cost him nothing more to make than he’d already paid. With just his signature, he made a life-changing gift for future Hospice of the Comforter patients and families.
You, too, can make a life-changing gift. By naming Hospice of the Comforter as beneficiary of an unneeded insurance policy, you can provide a gift that might not cost you anything more than what you’ve already paid. For some types of policies, you can even gift the policy itself to Hospice of the Comforter and take an income tax deduction.
