Wrestlers Help Hospice of the Comforter

enero 25, 2012 | By: Ray Barr

For Kevin Carpenger and Doug Peters, it was a chance to give back.  Carpenger coached Lake Brantley High’s wrestling team and Peters was athletic director and former wrestling coach at Lake Mary.  Both had lost parents to cancer.  In both cases, hospice programs helped ease those final days.  Neither of them forgot the experience.  So they decided to do something to “give back.”
In 2003, the duo began a charity wrestling exhibition featuring local high school wrestling coaches and alumni.  That first event raised about $1,000.  Since then the annual tournament has raised more than $28,000 for Hospice of the Comforter.
The annual event has grown as more participants have joined in the effort.  Referees from the Mid-Florida Wrestling Association volunteer their time to officiate.  This year more than 20 participants will hit the mat for the cause as high school coaches, alumni, and wrestlers from the UCF wrestling club put on an exhibition of strength and finesse.  This fun mix of participants makes for some highly competitive match ups as well as some fun and not-so-serious matches.  This year’s event also will feature a tribute by the Lake Brantley Dance Team before the match.
This year’s 10th Annual Coaches and Officials Charity Challenge again benefits Hospice of the Comforter.  The event begins at 7 PM on Monday, January 30 at Lake Brantley High School in Altamonte Springs.  A $5 admission donation is requested at the door.  Come cheer on the participants and raise money to support other patients and families needing hospice care.
