You Never Know: Connecting with a Patient
febrero 25, 2011 | By: Paula Calhoon, Volunteer
When I visited Robison Residence, the first person I saw was a woman with a bright pink ribbon in her white hair - Barbara Morris. Barbara was sitting in a comfy chair with a colorful afghan tucked around her legs. Her easy smile was captivating!
During World War II, she was an air base telephone switchboard operator. She raised her three children and when they were older she went to nursing school. Her career as a nurse was spent at Winter Park Hospital. Her nursing experiences caused her to be understanding and grateful of the efforts of the Hospice of the Comforter staff and volunteers. In turn this gracious lady is beloved by all who know her.
She said her two sons and one daughter were the most important part of her life. They live relatively close to Robison Residence and take turns visiting her. She speaks warmly of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and her dog. Barbara does miss her black German shepherd, Sheba, who now lives with her daughter. Thankfully, Sheba is allowed to visit her at Robison Residence. The most satisfying part of her life now is living with the lack of urgency and haste.
We talked and laughed about a lot of things that day. She said I could come back to visit. In my next visit, we decided to call each other “friend.”
You never know when you will meet someone very special.
